Fernand Léger composed numerous still-life scenes, setting the scene with a particular object or color. The Samovar is a recurring motif in the artist's plates, as he strives to construct and deconstruct it over the course of his gouaches on paper. The Samovar shown here is a whole, dominated by the yellow of her palette, and overlooking a ship with its net spread, and a bottle of wine. Unlike the artist's other Samovars, the two-color process of this gouache is a singularity in his work.
