HIPPOLYTE PETITJEAN 1854-1929

Hippolyte Petitjean started studying the arts when he was ten. He first studied drawing in his hometown and later received a scholarship to attend Paris's École des Beaux-Arts.
His encounter with Georges Seurat in 1884 had a huge consequence on his career. From that moment onward, Petitjean adopted the pictorial theory introduced by Seurat: Divisionism. His paintings are characterized by small dots of color juxtaposed to form an image. His repertory includes landscapes, mythological topics and some portraits. During his lifetime, his artworks have been exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants. Nowadays, they can be seen at the Musée d'Orsay, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art or at the Musée des Ursulines settled in Petitjean's hometown.
