The exhibition is scheduled to take place in Milan in Autumn 2022. It is the first retrospective in Italy, organized after years of research, on Max Ernst (1891-1976), the German - later naturalised American and French - painter, sculptor, engraver, poet, and art theorist. The exhibition is curated by Martina Mazzotta and Jürgen Pech and is promoted and produced by the City of Milan, Palazzo Reale and Electa, in collaboration with Madeinart.
The exhibition will showcase about 200 pieces, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, illustrated books, and jewellery from foundations, private collections, and museums such as: Tate, London; Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice; Musei Vaticani, Rome; Beyeler Foundation, Basel; Max Ernst Museum, Brühl; and Centre Pompidou, Paris.
The immense breadth of themes and experiments in Ernst's work spans over seventy years of the Twentieth century between Europe and the United States, constantly eluding any tangible definition.
Pictor ductus, profound connoisseur and visionary interpreter of the history of art, philosophy and science, Max Ernst is presented through this project as a humanist in the neo-Renaissance sense of the word. The project title, Bellezza e Bizzarria, is a tribute to Mario Praz.
On the occasion of the exhibition: "Max Ernst: Bellezza e Bizzarria" Helene Bailly Gallery will lend a work by Max Ernst "Project for a monument to Leonardo da Vinci" (1957) at the Palazzo Reale in Milan.
