For its autumn exhibition, galerie HELENE BAILLY pays tribute to a major 20th-century artist: Bernard Buffet (1928-1999). From his dazzling success to his tragic end, his iconic style made him the spokesperson for the anxieties of his time, to the extent that his gallery owner Emmanuel David declared that he had lived "in the century of Bernard Buffet". Through a tour of nearly thirty works, HELENE BAILLY invites you to rediscover the work-universe of a painter of genius.
This exhibition is conceived as a dialogue between the works of Bernard Buffet and those of the Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Modern masters. From Blanche Hoschedé-Monet to Jean Dubuffet and Albert Marquet, each brings a fresh perspective to Buffet’s inspirations, research and inventions. Among Matisse’s bouquets de Caillebotte, his flowers vibrate with all their expressionist power, while the city views of Félix Vallotton or Maurice de Vlaminck seem to foreshadow his desperately empty landscapes. The works respond to each other, explaining and illuminating each other, and reminding us that art is an eternal dialogue across the centuries.
The preview of the exhibition will take place during the Nocturne Rive Droite on Thursday September 14, 2023 from 5pm to 11pm. |
