Joan Miró, Francis Picabia and Pablo Picasso: A Cross Biography

Exhibiting Joan Miró, Francis Picabia and Pablo Picasso together highlights the creative energy of three giants of modern art, linked by their Spanish roots and an uncompromising artistic avant-garde.

While Miró and Picasso shared a sincere friendship, all three were also rivals, feeding off each other’s innovations.

The ‘Picas’, as Léonce Rosenberg called them, were able to transform their differences into an artistic dialogue, each gesture becoming a manifesto of radicalism and modernity. This complicity, tinged with competition, left its mark on the history of art, elevating each of them to the status of indisputable precursors.

While Picasso was the father of Cubism, Picabia developed a highly personal surrealism in his transpa- rencies, which Miro surpassed by knocking on the door of abstraction. It’s worth noting that in all three of these artists, we find the whimsical trace that precedes artistic creation and plays a major part in their uniqueness.
